Looks like Unreal Tournament will be coming out for the Mac soon. John and I like this because this will make the dev tools available cross-platform. Maybe Valve will make the next move because, again, the SDK would be made more available to the user, and would make our job easier in getting students [...]

John’s guide Inform 7 Snippets has been added to the links under New Media Reading and to the Interactive Fiction page in the sidebars. This is a wonderful and well designed list of items to problems you might need to tackle in IF. They come from questions and issues students had in our [...]

I love Blue Tatoo’s poise here on the subject of linearity and non-linearity:
The Fallout series was way ahead of its time in many respects, and I’m glad to hear about how Bethesda intends to carry on in the same spirit. It always bothers me in games when I encounter the linear quests, such as gathering [...]

UC Berkeley is putting lots of video-taped lectures on YouTube.
This tells me that they’ve been videotaping lots of their lectures for quite a while.
But is this really instructional?
Well, there you go.
Mark Bernstein points us to FlySketch screen-capturing. I can see wonderful uses of this for the laptop set in the classroom. How many times has the poetry teacher wanted to zone in on that prize example of synecdoche, store and share it. What about the programming teacher who wants to send off that juicy Python [...]
Our esteemed colleague, Ken Mikulski, informs us of Ted’s Mikulski’s work with Second Life. Ted’s Master’s thesis provides a glimpse into interesting applications of virtual worlds for studio design and architectural presentation and development:
‘The Tracer,’ also known as Ted Mikulski in real life, presented his Thesis Presentation for his Architectural Master’s Degree at Norwich University [...]

Various fetches brought me to the Rhizome Commissions page. A bright submitter from our new media group would be well rewarded. Do we have any takers? The second request looks interesting:
2) Community project
In 2007, Rhizome will also award one commission to an artist whose project will benefit our community, by enhancing communication, participation or user [...]
It’s sort of an in-joke, but I think John Timmons will find this Glen Slaven post interesting given issues with the embed tag that often comes with the use of modular media in web pages and weblog posts. It’s a response to Nick Bradbury’s post on RSS practices.
And out of this comes a new wordpress [...]

It’s always wise to follow Dave Winer’s thinking and his links. So here’s a post specifically meant for Beau Anderson.
Whenever journalist-programmer extraordinaire Adrian Holovaty speaks at a conference, newspaper executives approach him to ask, “Where can we find another person like you?” Unfortunately, not a lot of people combine journalism with computer programming [...]
USA Today has updated and redesigned its website. It would be a nice extra for someone in new media to analyze the changes given our recent subject of icons, sequences, and dynamic content.

Follow this link for more of Jeff Han and Touch Screen technology. Like Beau, I’m a little annoyed at the fullrun.

There are two new tabs at the top of every page (and also on the right sidebar) entitled Hypertext and Interactive Fiction respectively. These pages contain links to further information about theory, tools to create your own works, and other cool places to explore and interact with.

Interesting that this has to come from the BBC. The notion has to do with using the eyes, skills, and tech of those on the ground, “citizen reporters,” to spread the news about disasters or whatever else the government’s not very good at responding to.
Citizens could leave text, video and photos on the site [...]

A link suggestion from Susan Gibb, new media thinker and chief over at Spinning. So, what is the joke here?

This BBC article provides some detail about tech and its functional integration into the living environment with courses for trades people on the way.
An industry association has drawn up qualifications that recognise trade expertise in the technologies used in home entertainment and automation….
“There’s been a market for home automation and a separate market on digital [...]
