UC Berkeley is putting lots of video-taped lectures on YouTube.
This tells me that they’ve been videotaping lots of their lectures for quite a while.
But is this really instructional?
Well, there you go.

These videos serve several purposes and I think that they are instructional. They are great for review of a lecture. I missed Math class this past Monday because I was just burnt at the end of the work day. Tuesday, I would have loved to go and review the class.
But gaging by the comments on the “” lecture, it is also marketing the college. One person even remarked “Damn, see this must be the difference between the less reputable schools (such as mine) and the ‘good’ ones…” True or not, this is the perception and it speaks volumes.
How hard is this to do? Not hard. Record, cut, export, upload. it could be done as part of an internship or work-study. So even the process of building this media is very educational and it has meaning.
YouTube is providing the hosting and bandwidth, and they’re making their content available to the masses. It’s a step toward open-learning; it’s a step in the right direction.
